Cost of Moving a Piano
By ProMatcher Staff
Question: How Much Does It Cost to Move a Piano?
Answer: Unfortunately, there is no easy way to price out piano moving. The cost of moving your piano will depend on several different factors, including:
1. Where you live
Your geographic location will impact the cost of the move. Labor costs tend to be higher in urban areas and large metropolitan areas.
2. Insurance coverage
In some cases, you may want to take out a separate insurance policy for the move (especially if you have an expensive piano). Unfortunately, this will increase the cost of the move. However, you'll have a little more peace of mind.
3. Type of piano being moved
Is this an upright piano or a grand piano? How heavy is it? What condition is the piano in? Is this an antique? How much is the piano worth? It is more expensive to move large pianos and pianos of extraordinary value.
4. Travel distance
Local moves are almost always cheaper than long-distance moves. In most cases, moving a piano 50 miles is going to be cheaper than moving it across the country.
5. Degree of difficulty
Moving a piano requires careful coordination and planning. How many people are needed to move the piano? Are there any tight turns? If you live in an apartment, does the piano fit in the building’s freight elevator? Does the piano need to be moved through a window? As the degree of difficult increases, so will the cost.
6. Number of stairs
Many piano movers often charge a set fee “per step” (including all of the landings). If you don’t have stairs in your home, you might be able to save a few dollars.
